Q: How can I begin to change my child's perception of reading?
A: You have to make it real for him/her. You have to convince kids through their experiences. You should try to integrate the skill of reading into their daily routine. Involve the kids when reading is required every day. For instance, when they ask for Kraft Mac-n-Cheese for dinner, engage them in reading the instructions with you. They can help with gathering supplies and ingredients, then simultaneously apply phonics, learn word attack skills, and new words. They will enjoy being involved and begin to see that learning to read improves your life together. If there's resistance they can always have P&J sandwiches instead!
